GDPR and Toastmasters District 71

Preparing for the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)

Background

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) is a regulation by which the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission intend to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals within the European Union (EU). It also addresses the export of personal data outside the EU. The GDPR aims primarily to give control back to citizens and residents over their personal data and to simplify the regulatory environment for international business by unifying the regulation within the EU. The GDPR will enter into force in all European Union countries on May 25th, 2018.

New D71 newsletter: the Blizzard of 2018 edition!

A white-out has struck the February edition of the D71 newsletter.

Stay tuned and we’ll try to get it up here ASAP!

The January D71 newsletter is out!

If you thought tonight’s supermoon-blue moon combination was something really special, then you probably won’t be all that impressed by the new D71 newsletter.

But just in case, here it is. Stories from around the district, with Division S (my home division) contributing a number of articles. There’s a lot of information. And a LOT of photos. In fact, before I compressed it, this issue was 25.6 MB!

I hope you enjoy it! District 71 January 2018 newsletter (<–click here to open)

D71 Toastmaster Steve Campion gets published in The Guardian!

Guardian newspaper story

Steve Campion’s article helps raise awareness of Toastmasters.

Delighted to report that an article by Steve Campion has been published in The Guardian newspaper!

Well done Steve! Here is a link.

Steve wrote the article to help raise awareness of Toastmasters, and it has been widely published. However the circulation of the Guardian means that many more people will find Steve’s advice after today!

Here’s a taste of what Steve wrote:

Want to win over an audience? How to improve your presentation skills

Whether the prospect of delivering a presentation fills you with excitement or dread, there are key steps to ensuring you make an impact

Presentations shouldn’t be just a set of bullet points on a screen. In An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore used presentation slides to provide a compelling argument to his audience. Your next business presentation may not win any awards, but there are things you can do to make an impact.

Remember, it’s not about you

There are many reasons why you would need to give a presentation: pitching for funding, building a business relationship or making a sale. However, the overall purpose of your presentation should always do one thing: provide something your audience needs. In his book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey writes: “Begin with the end in mind”. Think about what you want the audience to do as a result of hearing your talk – whether it is to buy your product the next day or introduce you to their company’s senior decision-makers. . . . Athlone is celebrating. . . and you’re invited!
