Congratulations to David Clinton and Guy Doza, winners of the autumn D71 Speech Contests in Sheffield.

Both these fellas use drama to make an impression, and it paid off big style!

David won the 2017 Table Topics contest in bold fashion after jumping off the stage with the Irish flag. Guy prefaced his Humourous Speech Contest-winning speech by asking the audience to promise to cheer loudly when he tore open his shirt. When he did, his t-shirt read “VEGAN” — the topic of his speech.

We Toastmasters often get almost single-mindedly focussed on the words we are saying when we are preparing our speech. These latest D71 champions prove that attention to gestures can have a dramatic effect on the impact of your speech.

Well done to all the contestants at the D71 contests, and to everyone who took part from club level to the Sheffield contests.

Now. Time to get ready for the spring contests in Cork!
