History #12 District 71 Achievements in the’80s

Growth in the ’80s, as I said, while slow but steady, was gradually creeping closer to what was then seen as the magical figure of 50 clubs. Educational completions, though, were a problem and failure to meet our targets in these areas resulted in the District frequently failing to achieve Distinguished District status. Notable exceptions to this were in 1984/85, when Select Distinguished status (top 12) was achieved under the leadership of David Lindsey (Aylesbury and Thame). This was the first success at International level for the now 13-year-old district. David, a member since 1974, also possesses the distinct honour of achieving the first DTM, awarded in D71, to a member. This is what David wrote in the September/October 1985 edition of “The Spokesman”, the British and Irish Toastmasters District 71 Bulletin.

District 71 has achieved the award of Select Distinguished District for its progress during the year. Santa Ana sets certain targets for each District at the beginning of the Toastmasters Year. We were given a goal of 27 CTMs (we made 91!), 6 ATMs (we made it!), 3 new clubs (we got 4) and about 100 new members (we got over 230!). In addition, two Youth Leadership Courses and two Success/Leadership seminars were given. The award has never been won by District 71. In January 1985 the District was 45th in the World rankings (out of 75 Districts), and by the end of June we had risen to 11th which is a terrific achievement brought about by sheer hard work on the part of everyone in the British and Irish District – Members, Club Officers, Area and District Executives.”

“When you consider the challenges of distance between Britain and Ireland, and between both countries and WHQ and the costs of phone calls and postage, this was an admirable achievement. For example, surface mail from the U.S. took at least three months to reach the district. The postage, by airmail, of a simple educational module cost about $40 while it cost £2.77 sterling to post a new member kit from Britain, where they were stored, to Ireland. Remember this was a very small district of about 35 clubs and less than 1000 members.

Equally meritorious – because they faced the same challenges – were the achievements of Harry Knox (DLS), in 1987/88, and Joe Prendergast (Clonmel), in 1989/90, in achieving Distinguished District status. One can’t omit, either, the achievements of the other DGs during this decade who kept the show on the road in difficult circumstances. These were, Andrew Ducker (Oxford) 1979/80, Mike Murdock (Shillelagh) 1980/81, Gerald Keen (Grosvenor Sq), 1981/82, George Gallagher­Daggitt (Oxford), 1982/83, Mary O’Connor (Waterford), 1983/84, who served as the first DG from Ireland after four years of service from the afore mentioned, Mary Dwan (Dun Laoghaire) 1985/86, Norman Rhodes (Maidenhead) 1986/87, who received the International President’s Citation in August, 1989, awarded for outstanding contributions to TI, and John Earnshaw (Oxford), 1988/89.

My phone. I rarely use a computer now as I can send emails, take photos, use Facebook all on my phone. It’s easy to carry around and I can upload instantly.

With great power comes great responsibility. If you’ve ever experienced an over-zealous new team leader or manager, you might have this phrase ringing in your ears. It’s common practise for companies to promote members of staff into leadership roles and then develop them once there, instead of giving them the tools to do the job and then promoting them into the role once equipped.

The thing about a Toastmasters International public speaking club is that it provides an excellent opportunity for anyone seeking this toolset and mindset to try it out in a safe place, supported and encouraged instead of looking over their shoulder in fear of making a “career limiting” mistake or worse ruining someone else’s career through poor line management. It’s not just about making toasts or speeches, it’s so much more.

I’m going to share my story with you as I hope to inspire you to consider that there is another way….

Having worked in the corporate world for over 20 years I have experienced and witnessed many shocking and unprofessional incidents borne out of a lack of experience and understanding. The crucial factor to becoming a new leader of any kind is self-awareness; to understand your impact on others and to learn to listen first. Most people are never taught how to be a follower never mind a leader! At school we were told to sit down, shut up and do as we were told! It just felt like all the doors were firmly shut.

My own capability before I discovered Toastmasters was limited – I see that now – but I was unconsciously incompetent then. I would copy other team leaders hoping they were good role models to emulate but that only served to perpetuate bad practise, inconsistency and stressful conversations with disgruntled staff. Nothing seemed to change for the better, and there seemed to be limited formal training, you were supposed to just figure it out. The coping mechanisms and expected behaviours were never explained and I was struggling to be effective and influential.

After joining Toastmasters, I was given the opportunity to start learning the skills of leadership by undertaking the role of Mentor. It’s such a simple role, between two people meeting up monthly and one helping the other to achieve specific goals using the benefit of their knowledge and experience. But it taught me how to be a good listener. It taught me to remove myself from the equation – it’s not about me – it’s all about them. It also honed my problem-solving skills as I helped them navigate the challenges they faced.

Soon after that I wanted more. I became a deputy for one of the Club Committee roles, so I could learn the ropes before taking on the role officially. A few months later I was invited to apply for the full role and was voted in. I was now accountable for 23 people’s happiness! Then I was hooked; receiving excellent and useable feedback and evaluation with examples of what worked well, and what could be improved upon; so, I could assess how I was getting on in the role. This meant I could make small adjustments to become the best I could be. I thrived, and the club thrived.

When was the last time you gave or received great usable feedback with specific examples?

In the Toastmasters training programme, I noticed there were many opportunities there for me to lead on projects outside our club meetings. At the time I was planning on applying for the position of Project Manager at work (a promotion) so it seemed ideal. I was excited to get stuck in and thought that doing something that gave back to my Community would be the most rewarding non-work-related project.

I started my first Youth Leadership Program with a set of 15 students in an Academy near where I lived. I led a small team of Toastmasters to deliver the material and that meant delegating whole sections to them and watching without correcting them or interfering! Over ten weeks we guided the students towards the delivery of a showcase event where they all delivered speeches of more than four minutes each on a variety of subjects chosen by the students themselves. It was very well received by their parents and the school principal and I was asked back to duplicate our results with a new cohort. 5 years later I am about to deliver my seventh program….

Whilst all this was going on I was also delivering full training days using the Better Speaker Series and Leadership Excellence Series manuals to members and non-members alike, and I used my High-Performance Leadership Project to help me build and coordinate the team I used to deliver the training days. It walked me through from Vision, Mission etc right through to lessons learned after delivery, using delegation so that I didn’t do all the work myself.

Simultaneously I did get the promotion at work and I found the skills I picked up in Toastmasters were essential to my new role of communicating clearly at all levels with many different teams, colleagues, suppliers, stakeholders and customers. It taught me how to give effective feedback and how to delegate. I learned how to listen and lead.

Do you know any leaders who are good at listening?

The next opportunities gave me the remaining tools I needed to enable and empower.

I had really thrown myself into this personal development side of life and was enjoying it immensely. It was not long before I was asked to apply for the role of Area Director which gave me oversight of 5 clubs (and approximately 120 members). This brought in the new dynamic of trusting people I barely knew to undertake tasks towards a joint goal. Whilst this was tricky at first I soon found my stride and saw the similarities between this and working with remote teams in my job. I found I was able to help new people grow into leadership roles by using those mentoring skills I had learned all those years ago. I didn’t have to tell them how to do something I could just tell them the outcome I desired. My job was to guide them, check in with them and ensure they felt supported and encouraged. I made myself available and approachable – some needed more help than others, but I soon learned to tap into their working styles quickly.

I also learned the power of persuasion. It’s amazing how influential you can become when you say quietly to someone “I can see you doing X. I think you’d be really great at that, why don’t you give it a try?”

The pinnacle of my leadership training to date with Toastmasters was being asked to serve on the District Leadership Team as Administration Manager. Our small team of seven people led the 5000+ members in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland and England (North of London) through their own leadership and public speaking training journeys to help more and more people walk through open doors. The role came with travel, networking, operating at a senior level and ensuring all milestones were reached on time and within budget.

Hmmm doesn’t that sound familiar – that was what I was doing as a Project Manager!

The skills I learned have also enabled me to spread my wings further. I have started my own business as a communications specialist helping Autistic adults at work/ in to work and I deliver keynotes on the Transition from Follower to Leader and on Autism in the workplace.

I put on the very first TEDxTelford in 2018 with 15 live speakers and 100 people in the audience and am organising a second one. I was able to lead the organising team, coach the speakers, MC the event and get everything done in good time and inside budget and we sold out a week prior to the event.

Last year I achieved the highest award for all my work in Toastmasters International and can now call myself a Distinguished Toastmaster. Without doubt Toastmasters has been instrumental in my personal development and has opened many doors for me in terms of work and relationships. I believe that in becoming self-aware I have become a nicer person to be around and I have a very full and happy life.

Division F is geographically quite large with the furthest apart clubs Galway and Mid-Ulster 264 kilometres (160 Miles) from one another which is also a four-hour drive. The division has 20 clubs several of which are rural and are aligned to five Areas. Divisional contests can be challenging due to the distances involved. Understandably as judges must not be from a competing club it can be difficult to persuade somebody to drive four hours to the contest, judge the contest and then spend 4 hours driving home again particularly in the winter. However, all the clubs are in gorgeous locations with wildly different scenery and interesting history so staying overnight is not a hardship. This year we had the Division F Humorous Speech and Table Topics contests in our newest club Loughrea, County Galway in Area 12. The International Speech and Evaluation contests will take place in Ballybofey, County Donegal in Area 04 on Saturday April the 13th.

  1. Area 04 led by Area Director Ken McKenzie from the Foyle Speakers Club consists of four clubs: Talk on the Wilde Side, Talk Club, Foyle Speakers and Mid Ulster.
  2. Area 9 led by Area Director Thérèse Kinahan from the Athlone Club consists of five clubs: Athlone, Cavan, Longford, Mullingar and Tullamore.
  3. Area 12 led by Area Director Pat Coakley from the Galway Club consists of four clubs: Corrib, Galway, Loughrea and Tuam.
  4. Area 27 led by Area Director Paul Gannon from the Westport Club consists of three clubs Ballina, Castlebar and Westport.
  5. Area 38 led by Kevin McGill from the Carrick-on-Shannon Club consists of four clubs: Carrick-on-Shannon, Erne Speakers, Sligo and Sligo Public Speakers.

At the start of this year we had a realignment of clubs. The Loughrea Club chartered which meant that there were seven clubs in Area 12. It was decided to split Area 12 keeping the four Galway clubs in Area 12 and creating a new Area 27 for the three Mayo clubs. The old Area 12 was huge, and the new alignment is making Area Director visits and Area Competitions much easier.

This year is the first full year of Pathways and the Division’s main goal is to have at least one level 1 in each club and that person be an officer in next year in their club and be a pathways champion for their club. There is a clear co-correlation between the clubs that have embraced pathways in the division and club growth or decline. This makes sense since all new members joining after July have had to use Pathways as their educational program. Pathways appears complex when viewed in its totality. However, level one is very well thought out and easy to explain to new members. When they have completed level one they will have learnt what their existing skills are from doing an Icebreaker; learnt how to receive feedback and give a speech evaluation; learnt how to conduct research on a topic and use that to create a new speech. This is easier to explain than the old Competent Communicator and Leader programs. This is going to take a while to embed. The key is simplicity. Nobody in the past at their first meeting was told what exactly was involved in getting to a DTM and all the choices they would have to make along the way, given that at that stage they wouldn’t have known what a DTM was or why it was valued.

Area 27 is the smallest area in the division with three clubs. Westport was chartered in 2003, Ballina was next and chartered in 2005, with our newest club, Castlebar, chartering in 2017. Toastmasters was not new to Castlebar as there was a club in Castlebar back in the 1980s and so it was wonderful to see some of the members in attendance from the original club on charter night.

For me as a local member it was a privilege to watch Toastmasters members from clubs in Galway, Ballina and Westport travel to Castlebar of their own volition, to demonstrate how a typical Toastmasters meeting is run. This was the spirit of Toastmasters in action, and Castlebar was extremely grateful to the members of the local clubs and to the Westport Club which sponsored the club and help them establish and charter.

As area director, this spirit continues to motivate me to give back as much as I have got from Toastmasters. It might be perceived as easy for me to be in regular contact with the officers in all three clubs in my area, as I have only three clubs to visit. However, the challenges faced in all three clubs are unique to them and keep me busy and engaged. It has been a privilege to serve as area director, and I have learned as much at club officer training as I have imparted.

Area 12 incorporates four clubs in County Galway with 116 members and a combined 50 years club experience. This includes the Division’s most recent club, Loughrea, which chartered in the last year. As this would have entailed seven clubs in the Mayo-Galway area, this was divided into two.  Loughrea has grown to a vibrant club with membership now at a healthy twenty-eight.   Member numbers across the area cover a broad variety of ages and walks of life. Each club has its own distinctive flavour and style of meeting, but all are friendly and welcoming.

The area contest, hosted by Oranmore 10th November, showcased the skills of ten contestants in the Humorous and Table Topics contests.  It was a measure of the high standards here that the two winners, Rob Partridge and Gerry McNulty, progressed through the next level, and are to represent Division F at the District contests in May.

Loughrea Club hosted the Division contests 24th November with attendees travelling from across the midlands and north.

Area 12 did a Schools outreach with eight students at Coláiste an Chreagáin conducting the Youth Leadership Programme, led by Frances Geoghegan, assisted by Sarah Hearty and James Linnane.

Toastmaster’s highest achievement, Distinguished Toastmaster was attained by Division Director Pat Croke of the Galway Club. Three other members in the area are working to achieve the DTM award over the coming year.

Thérèse Kinahan Area 9 Director

Area 9 covers four midland counties; Cavan, Longford, Offaly and Westmeath.

The oldest club in this region is Athlone. Members of this club were instrumental in starting the other clubs in the area as well as clubs in the west and north-west.

The current Area Director (AD) is from the Athlone Club and is the third consecutive AD from this club. Last year (2017-18), Athlone celebrated its 30th Anniversary, while also achieving President’s Distinguished. It’s an international club and during the past year has welcomed members from Ecuador, Brazil, Italy, India, Pakistan, Syria, Egypt, Portugal, Australia and South Africa.

The Assistant Area Director is currently serving as a coach to the Longford Club working with a past Area Director. Longford may be small, but the coaches have helped to increase membership and the standard of meetings is excellent.

Mullingar is the second largest town in Area 9 with a club which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2017. This is a club with a strong core of experienced speakers and leaders. It continues to grow and to innovate. This club does PR very well, with articles in the newspapers after each meeting. Meetings are always fun.

Tullamore has not been a very large club during the past couple of years but has a steady membership. Tullamore hosted a joint meeting with Mullingar this month, as a return visit following the club’s visit to Mullingar club’s open night.

Our Northern Star is Cavan which shines so brightly and welcomes us all so warmly as they did for the January COT, with full attendance from their own club. Big thanks to Navan for all the work with Cavan which has seen this club grow and develop.

Doing the work of AD is only possible with the active support of club officers.

Why I joined Toastmasters?

In 2012 I started my new job and the role entailed a lot of speaking in the forms of training, speaking to customers internal and external. It was early on in my career and I froze while conducting a training session in front of 50+ people. I felt like I had failed myself and felt nervous knowing I would have to conduct more training sessions! One of my colleagues asked if I had a Toastmasters club near me, she really boasted about the fantastic experience she had with toastmasters and mentioned if I could find a club and try it out it might help me at work! I felt like a ray of hope had hit me and maybe this is what I had needed to do to get myself back on track!

I went to visit Heart of England Club in December 2012 and became a member in March 2013. The members were so welcoming and encouraging and just the environment I needed!

How has toastmasters helped me?

Toastmasters was a life saver for me, it has been like a springboard of opportunities. Since joining Toastmasters, I have run many training sessions at work, had plenty of interactions with clients and have been kindly promoted 3 times in the last 6 years, I always asked the reason for promotion and always ask what can I do better? I was told it was the skills I have obtained in being able to lead, being confident taking a task and running with it and having the ability to explain the same thing in different ways. All these skills came from being a committed Toastmaster and practice makes perfect!

Outside work I feel as though I have found my voice, I practise Tae Kwon Do and in the years of being a Toastmaster I finally plucked up the courage to become an instructor and without Toastmasters, I would not have been able to lead classes on my own.

My aim now is to do the Area Director role, gaining my DTM award and helping others achieve their goals. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing others progress and being the best versions of themselves!

What are you most proud of about your Toastmasters club?

I am currently the President of Walsall Speakers. There are so many things I am so proud of with this club I don’t think I can limit it to just one! We recently chartered in September 2018 and it was such an achievement and commitment from the club committee to get the word out there and get us finally on the map! Since then the club has gone from strength to strength and the vibe is so amazing every time we meet! I always leave with a positive energy wanting to achieve so much more!

Why I joined Toastmasters?

While working in the IT industry, I got the opportunity to speak in front of 200 people in Belgium on a technology problem. The presentation did not go as planned, but that gave me the motivation to learn more about public speaking and gain confidence. Eventually, I attended a Toastmaster meeting in Bristol. Later I move back to Hatfield, and that is where I joined Hertfordshire Speakers, and since then I have never looked back.

How has Toastmasters helped me?

Since joining Toastmasters, my confidence has improved tremendously, due to the valuable feedback I have received from club members. I see clearly what works and what doesn’t

Learning to track my time, construct a concise message and control my filler words and getting valuable feedback has helped with my efforts to learn public speaking and gain confidence in delivering speeches.

My colleagues, friends, peers, and staff now come to me for advice on how to improve their confidence and increase their presentation skills. I advise them to join Toastmasters to practise speaking in front of an audience and to develop their stories and story-telling abilities. Public speaking is a significant way to establish credibility and attract clients.

What are you most proud of about your Toastmasters club?

My club offers a supportive environment and an atmosphere where I feel safe. Members like Elizabeth Jordon, Bob Ferguson, Jillian Haslam and Davina Malcolm are friendly, committed, organised and willing to help, and they are great story-tellers. Sometimes we meet outside the club for special celebrations. It is great being a member.

Why I joined Toastmasters?

Almost two years ago I read an article in a newspaper about Toastmasters. I had previously imagined them to be a stuffy guild for the kind of Toastmaster you see at posh weddings – how wrong I was.

I was looking for ways to improve my confidence, having been in the same job for the previous 17 years and therefore rusty on interview techniques! I had even turned down the offer of presenting a piece of work at a National developer conference – potentially a significant career boost – because I was petrified of the very idea. Meeting more local people was also a priority; having commuted an hour each way for those 17 years, I knew very few people in my home town.

How has toastmasters helped me?

It took almost a year for me to pluck up the courage to go along to a meeting and, when I did, I thoroughly enjoyed it! It was interesting, fun and everyone was very friendly. I noticed how supportive they all were and decided to go along, as a guest, some more. At each meeting I was asked to talk about my experience, and I spoke first time – for a full 15 seconds – from my seat. The next time I was invited to the front to do the same and, slowly with all that support and applause, I gained confidence.

When I joined, and gave my first speech, I was surprised to find that I enjoyed it! I may not be good at it… yet… and am still very nervous, but I do enjoy public speaking. Now, if asked to give a speech at a national conference, I would no longer run away screaming.

We are doing well.

As at the middle of February 56 of our clubs had achieved 5 DCP goals or better.

The following Clubs – that were not Distinguished last year – have already potentially achieved Distinguished or better status this year, providing they end the year with 20 + members or a net growth of 5 members.  $30 worth of TI shop items are up for grabs.  Many more clubs could join them. Pathways is also progressing well.

“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals”, Zig Ziglar (recognised as one of the greatest motivational speakers and recipient of the Toastmasters International Golden Gavel award in 1999).

Happy New Year and welcome to the second half of the toastmaster year 2018-19. Whatever your toastmaster goal is you have just under six months to achieve it. My wish for all members and all clubs is that you achieve your goals this toastmaster year.

A healthy club means more members and a better toastmaster experience for all. Lark Doley, International President of Toastmasters International, has introduced the #WowFactor program for clubs for 2019.

  1. Goal:
    To increase the quality & performance of every club and to get members to think and say “Wow!” when they attend a meeting.
  2. How:
    In January/February use the Club Quality Checklist or Moments of Truth to carry out a deep analysis of your club’s health. Find any gaps or areas of weakness. Club officers and members should work together to address any weak areas. Get on board with the District PR Manager Daniel Sandars’ incentives and hold Open House nights. Aim to make your club “the best club possible”.
  3. Video:
    Have fun and send in a one-minute video of your club’s unique “Wow!”
    experience using #wow!factor. Let’s put District 71 on the map internationally by sending in “Wow!” videos and copying them to Daniel Sandars – Daniel Sandars, District 71 PR Manager – so they can be put on the District’s Facebook page and website.

By March, every club should have achieved the “wow!” factor and should aim to ensure that every member and guest has a “wow!” experience when they attend your club.

– stock up your club with Pathways ribbons and badges

#OpenNight Public Relations are key to a great open night. An open night (or Open House or Guest Night) highlights and engages an entire club and helps it grow. Open nights can have refreshments, decorations and a headliner speaker. They are an all-round fun night.

To claim: simply send your Open Night guest list, highlight those that joined, and tell me about the PR channel you used. Daniel Sandars, District 71 PR Manager

For Example: campus-based Cranfield Speakers (Division H) had a stall at two freshers fairs, did poster and leaflet drops around campus, created an Open Night event on Meetup and Facebook and gave additional social media publicity on Twitter and Instagram. They had 133 new enquiries of which 80 attended the open night and ten had joined within two months

External Event Grants

Have you got the opportunity to set up a stall at a public event? There are grants of 125 euro towards promotional materials and or venue costs. The grants are competitive and will be based on the likely foot fall, how well you know your target audience and your plans to attract them as guests to your club

Write an article for Chantal

Chantal Cooke is a Public Relations agent who helps members publish educational articles to the national press. Last year we gained the editorial value of over half a million euro. This year authors will go into a prize draw for a £240 conference ticket

Travelling Toastie

It is great fun to visit other clubs to strengthen fellowship and gain ideas. Do three things 1) capture photo or testimonial video that includes the brand and your hosts, 2) distribute that out to social media where it can be seen, and 3) bring it to the District’s attention by hash tagging and or tagging us.
