SUMMARY:District Club Officer Training - July 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Program Quality Team hosted a Club Officer Training event t
hat was relevant\, engaging and fun.\n\nHere is a brief summary of what wa
s covered\, along with some useful links.\n\nWelcome by District Leaders\n
Brenda Lannon\, District Director\, welcomed us and set out the theme of g
rowing community together. With over 300 participants in the event\, this
was a great demonstration of our members' and officers' dedication to help
ing our members.\n\nElizabeth Jordan\, Program Quality Director\, explaine
d the format of the event and highlighted that it was an opportunity for e
veryone to learn together. She shared a quote\, "I am still learning".  T
his was attributed to Michaelangelo\, who said it at the age of 87 while p
ainting the Sistine Chapel.\n\nParliamentary Procedures and Effective Meet
 ings\nLarry Lyons\, District Parliamentarian\, described the benefits of "
Parliamentary Procedure" within meetings. This approach allows important i
tems to be be discussed\, for everyone to be able to contribute and for de
cisions to be made effectively.  He recommended Roberts Rules of Order Ne
wly Revised\, In Brief\, 3rd edition as an extremely helpful resource\, to
be used alongside the Toastmasters International Governing Documents.\n\n
The Distinguished Club Program and Documented Changes in People\nTed Corco
ran\, DTM and Past International President\, explained the value of the Di
stinguished Club Program in creating "Documented Changes in People".  He
shared ten reasons why being a Distinguished club is important:\n\n Shows
how well clubs deliver the Club Mission\n Measures personal growth of me
mbers\n Focuses clubs on service to members\n Affords club officers and
members practice in setting and achieving goals\n Reflects positively on
the leadership and management qualities of club officers\n Gives members
a sense of pride in the club's success\n Develops a club culture of succe
ss\n Maintains the Toastmasters brand\n\nTed celebrated the achievements
of clubs in the 2021-22 Toastmasters year in which 100 clubs achieved Dist
inguished status or better.  He then set us all the challenge of working
together as a team to achieve at least 150 Distinguished clubs in the 2022
 -23 year\, our District's 50th anniversary year.\n\nJuly Poem - At the Sta
rt of the Toastmasters Year\nPhilip Khan-Panni\, District Poet-in-Residenc
e\, read his poem for July:\nHow we sighed for the sight of a room full of
folks\nWho would look in your eye\, even laugh at your jokes\;\nThere is
nothing quite like it when people are near\nAt the start of a Toastmasters
year.\n\nAll throughout the pandemic we managed with Zoom\;\nIt was not q
uite the same as being live in the room.\nTrying to cope with it all raise
d a new set of fears\nDuring two techie Toastmaster years.\n\nWe had visit
ors coming from faraway lands\nAnd the things that they told us we could q
uite understand\,\nFor they carried the cadence of shared interests\nAnd b
eing willing to give of their best.\n\nLet us see the next year as if brea
king new ground\,\nWe should strengthen the bonds with the new friends we
found\,\nAnd together move on as new targets appear\nAt the start of this
Toastmasters year.\nClub Officer Roles Breakout Rooms\nClub officers were
trained in their roles within role-specific breakout rooms.  Our thanks t
 o the facilitators:\nPresident: Liz Welch &amp\; Maria Orlovic\nVP\, Educa
tion: Sue Burnett &amp\; Gerard Mannix\nVP\, Membership: Danny Banks\nVP\,
Public Relations:  Ernold Van Bueren\nTreasurer: Steve Campion\nSecretar
 y: Brenda Lannon\nSergeant-at-Arms: Elizabeth Jordan\n\nCreating a Quality
  Club\nSteve Campion\, DTM\, Past Administration Manager\, facilitated a d
iscussion on how to create a high quality club.  Steve introduced the Mom
ents of Truth process\, in which club members and officers are asked to ev
aluate their club based on:\n\n First impressions\n Membership orientati
on\n Fellowship\, variety and communication\n Program planning and meeti
 ng organisation\n Membership strength\n Achievement recognition\n\nIt wa
s recommended that every club conducts a Moments of Truth session as soon
as possible\, so that the club can celebrate their successes and decide on
priorities for the future.\n\nSteve then described the Club Success Plan\
, an important document that helps club executive committees and their mem
bers to plan for the year ahead. It helps with setting expectations about
how committee members will communicate and support each other\, how decisi
ons will be made and how achievements will be recognised.  It supports mo
re detailed planning for educational activities and the building of member
ship strength. All clubs are encouraged to work on a Club Success Plan as
soon as possible\, and share with with their members and Area Director.\n\
nClosing Remarks\nBrenda Lannon\, District Director\, thanked the Program
Quality team for the excellent training session and for the enthusiasm and
engagement of all club officers in attendance.  Elizabeth Jordan\, Progr
am Quality Director\, thanked presenters and attendees and asked that we g
ive special recognition to the technical team that supported the event (Ca
 meron Mcconnachie\, Gearoid Murphy\, Liz Welch\, Matty Behan\, Moira O'Bri
en and Sarinca Janga).\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nUseful resources\n\n Club Leadership
