From The District

Mairead Dillion

District Director

Hello fellow Toastmasters!

The next 2 months are going to be so exciting for the District and for you!

The fantastic news is that the District is on track to retain Distinguished status and that is thanks to our brilliant leaders and members across the District. I am asking you as District Director to work on getting your club back to good standing so that we can continue to be recognised as one of the top performing Districts in the world. A small number of clubs have not yet renewed 8 members so please make a special effort to make that happen. The DLT are here to help and don’t hesitate to get in contact if you need additional support.

Being a Distinguished District is effectively telling the world that we provide a superior experience for our members and that every member matters. We care about ensuring every member receives a great education and feels part of the International Toastmasters family.

As well as achieving this goal, we have the wonderful Rose Conference to look forward to in Tralee. The keynote speakers, contests and workshops will be second to none and it will be so joyful to meet up and reunite with friends from all over the District. Please come along, you will have a very enjoyable experience.

Finally, I wish you every success in your club over the next couple of months. Whether your goal is to achieve your educational aspirations, join the club committee or increase membership, you can do it!!

When called upon to do so

Steve Campion

Programme Quality Director

Do you remember the sixth line of the Toastmasters Promise?

Just in case you don’t have it memorised, here’s a reminder: “As a member of Toastmasters International and my club, I promise … to serve my club as an officer when called upon to do so”.

That promise became very real to me about a month ago. I’m a member of a club in which our treasurer, who had faithfully served our club for many years, sadly passed away. We miss her and coming to terms with her loss hasn’t been easy. Added to that, we realised that all of our members had paid their Toastmasters renewal fees into our club bank account – that nobody could access.

Obviously… “I’d love to help, but”… we’re in the middle of contest season, I’m already serving as an officer in two other clubs, we’ve got the District conference coming up, I’m helping other clubs with renewals, there are Area Director elections, the project I’ve been leading at work for three years is at it’s most critical stage, my parents need support, I need some sleep … and I have a club that I care about that needs my help.

So now I’m the club treasurer.

And I’ve learned a LOT. Not just about the treasurer role, but how to deal with things when they don’t go according to plan.

This is the time of year that all clubs need people to step up as leaders. This isn’t just about serving your fellow club members or supporting a club that you care about. It is one of the best ways you can develop your leadership and communication skills. Read this document to learn how each role builds real-world skills:

Being an officer matters more than you think. Are you willing to serve?

60 Days to Go – The Final Stretch to Distinguished Success

Kevin O'Reilly

Club Growth Director

As we approach the final 60 days of the Toastmasters year, this is the moment where effort turns into achievement, and commitment becomes recognition.

Across District 71, club officers, members, Area and Division Directors have worked tirelessly to build vibrant, supportive learning environments. This is a time to pause—just briefly—and recognise what has already been accomplished.

Thank You for Your Dedication

Every speech delivered, every meeting organised, every member supported has contributed to something bigger:
A thriving network of clubs helping individuals grow in confidence, communication, and leadership.

Your work directly supports the Toastmasters mission—creating a positive learning environment where every member can succeed.

For those clubs already on track to become Distinguished, Select Distinguished, or President’s Distinguished, congratulations. You are setting the standard for excellence and demonstrating what strong leadership and teamwork can achieve.

And let’s not forget—belonging to a Distinguished club is something to be proud of. It reflects quality, consistency, and a commitment to member success.

Special Recognition – Smedley Distinguished Clubs

A huge round of applause goes to the following clubs who have achieved the incredible milestone of 10 out of 10 Distinguished Club Programme (DCP) goals:

  • Belfast Toastmasters
  • West Hearts Speakers Club
  • North Bucks Speakers Club
  • Dublin South Toastmasters
  • Sheffield Speakers
  • Liverpool City Toastmasters
  • Manchester Orators Toastmasters Club

Together, these seven clubs represent over 265 members—a powerful testament to what is possible when clubs focus on excellence, engagement, and growth.

Achieving a “full house” in the DCP is no small feat. It requires:

  • Strong educational progress
  • Consistent membership growth
  • Effective leadership and administration

These clubs are shining examples for the entire District.

Still Time to Achieve Distinguished Status

If your club hasn’t yet reached Distinguished status—there is still time.

The next 60 days can make all the difference. With focused effort and teamwork, clubs can still achieve or even exceed their goals.

Here are practical ways clubs can move the needle quickly:

1. Focus on Educational Awards

  • Encourage members to complete Pathways levels already in progress
  • Run education-focused meetings or mini-marathons
  • Pair members with mentors for fast-tracked completion

2. Build Membership Momentum

  • Host an Open House or Guest Event
  • Encourage each member to bring one guest
  • Follow up promptly—conversion is key

3. Strengthen Retention

  • Check in with inactive members
  • Offer flexible roles or speaking opportunities
  • Reinforce the value of the club experience

4. Deliver Quality Meetings

  • Energising, well-run meetings improve retention and attraction
  • Variety, recognition, and strong evaluations matter

5. Leverage Team Support

  • Engage your Area Director or Club Coach
  • Share best practices with neighbouring clubs
  • Use proven strategies—successful districts focus on membership growth and club excellence together

The Final Push

This is where momentum builds. Small actions, taken consistently over the next 60 days, can transform outcomes.

Whether your club is aiming for:

  • First-time Distinguished
  • Moving up to Select or President’s Distinguished
  • Or achieving a perfect 10

Now is the time to act.

Final Thought

The Distinguished Club Programme is more than a scorecard—it’s a reflection of how well we serve our members.

Let’s finish the year strong, celebrate success, and create even more opportunities for members to grow.

60 days. One final push. Endless potential.

Light The Fire: Our Month of Momentum and Mastery

Stallone-Obaraemi Samuel

Public Relations Manager

District 71, the fire is no longer just a spark, it is a blaze.

As we move through the heart of April 2026, I am struck by the sheer volume of passion coursing through our clubs. Across our entire District, we have seen the true essence of “Give To Gain” a relentless commitment to shared growth and the transformative power of the spoken word.

The Resilience of the Human Spirit: “You Are Not Finished Yet”
Nothing exemplifies the “why” of Toastmasters more than the stories of our own members. This month, we spotlight a powerful narrative of resilience: Sheena Pritchard, a former Aberdeen nurse whose life took an unexpected turn following a toxic fume accident.

Sheena Pritchard’s story isn’t just about a change in career; it is about the courage to redefine one’s path. Her speech resonated deeply, motivating everyone in attendance to see life through a more positive lens. Her journey serves as a clarion call to every member: no matter the setback, “you are not finished yet.” In District 71, we don’t just “talk”, we build the fortitude to reclaim our narratives.

The Arena of Growth: Celebrating Our Competitors

We extend a massive congratulations to the winners who have triumphed in our various contests at every level this month. To those who stood on the stage and spoke their truth: your courage is our inspiration. Beyond the trophies, we applaud every single participant. Competition is the ultimate forge for leadership; it forces us to sharpen our wit, manage our nerves, and refine our message under the heat of the spotlight. This growth is a permanent gain; the confidence you built on the contest stage is the same confidence that will carry you through high-stakes presentations and life-changing conversations. You didn’t just participate; you evolved.

April has been a month of high-stakes excellence where we transitioned from the “club room” to the “global stage.”

The Power of Competition: Our recent contests have been about more than winning trophies; they are about pressure-testing our ability to think on our feet and deliver under scrutiny.
Mastering the Craft: Our educational sessions this month focused on high-level strategy and digital influence. We didn’t just learn to speak; we learned to market a message and lead a digital movement. We learned the somewhat unconventional and deeper meaning of resilient leadership.
Transferable Skills: The skills we hone here; strategic storytelling, project governance, and brand building, are directly applicable to our professional lives. Whether you are a business founder or a community leader, the ability to articulate a vision with clarity is your greatest asset.

The Rose Conference: Where the Fire Becomes a Forge

With only a few weeks to go, the anticipation for The Rose Conference 2026 in Tralee is reaching a fever pitch. To those who have already registered: prepare to immerse yourselves. A gathering of this magnitude is more than a series of meetings; it is a high-octane environment for networking, peer-to-peer mentorship, and cultural exchange. Take full advantage of every workshop and every conversation over coffee, these are the moments where “Thought Leaders” are born.

For those who have not yet secured their place, I encourage you to do so as your circumstances allow. Opportunities to gather with the brightest minds of the North of the United Kingdom, and Ireland are rare and transformative. Don’t let the final weeks slip by. Be part of the legacy we are building in Tralee.

The PR Engine
Your Public Relations team has been working tirelessly to ensure your successes are documented and celebrated. As we prepare for the final sprint of the programme year, our strategic focus is sharper than ever:
Strategic Growth: We have increased publicity to directly support club growth efforts, ensuring our “product” reaches those who need it most.
Digital Legacy: We are nearing completion on the archiving of our history on the District 71 website, ensuring that the lessons learned today are available for the leaders of tomorrow.
Operational Excellence: We have consolidated our toolset and created branded content kits to empower local leaders to act as professional PR agents in their own communities.

The Home Stretch

As we look toward the final months of this programme year, I challenge you to keep “Lighting the Fire.”

The work we do in the Public Relations Team is a reflection of the brilliance you bring to your meetings every week. Name the people in your circles who are “Giving to Gain.” By celebrating the “Quiet Giants” among us, we all gain a stronger, more inspired District.

We are not just a collection of clubs; we are a community of Brand Builders and a powerhouse of human potential.
Keep speaking. Keep leading.

Keep Lighting the Fire!

The Final Quarter

In the turning of the calendar,

the final quarter’s here.

A time to lift our voices high,

to finish strong this year.

For growth is built in moments

- small steps that shape our way

and progress is the promise

that we honour day by day.

As new committees gather,

with fresh vision in their hands.

They shape the next horizon,

where our district proudly stands.

A passing of the torch begins

- a future yet untold,

where leadership is nurtured

and new talents will unfold.

April feels like the district has shifted up a gear and rightly so. With the Rose Conference in Tralee just weeks away (8–10 May), there’s a real sense of momentum building across the clubs. If you haven’t booked your place yet, I’d urge you to do it this week, this is one of those gatherings you’ll genuinely regret missing. Whether it’s the contests, the workshops, or simply the conversations over coffee, conferences have a habit of changing things. You’ll find a personal account of exactly that in this edition.   With this in mind, check out the various testimonials and articles from members about their conference experiences.

Elsewhere in the newsletter, we’re trying something new. For the first time, we’re featuring podcasts, because great communication doesn’t stop when the lectern is packed away.  Communication happens in so many different places and ways – as Toastmasters, we should always be trying these new learning opportunities. If you’re involved in a podcast connected to Toastmasters, leadership, or public speaking, I’d love to hear from you for next month’s edition.

And if you’re looking for a quick weekly boost, do check out Ten Minute Toasty Tips, bite-sized learning that fits around a busy life. You’ll find the article in the Communication & Leadership section, and it’s well worth your ten minutes.

As always, this newsletter is only as good as what you send in, so keep the stories, photos, and club highlights coming.

They matter more than you think. Your contributions ensure that this truly becomes your newsletter. With so many great things happening across our clubs, we want to keep sharing and celebrating them and please include some pictures.

Here’s the link to submit content again, in case you need it:

https://forms.d71toastmasters.org/share-news

A special call‑out to all Area Directors encourage your clubs to submit.  I’d love to see every Area submit at least one article, recognition piece, or highlight for the April edition. And remember a picture tells a thousand words, so the more images and photos you can provide, the better.

If you’re interested in getting involved, please reach out to the District PR Team we’re looking to expand the team.

Thank you, and I hope you enjoy this month’s newsletter.
