The Anglia Turnaround: From Limping to Leading
If your club is currently “limping” toward the finish line, feeling the weight of a fragmented committee or dwindling numbers, this story is for you. This time last year, Anglia Toastmasters was exactly there: 14 members, 3 DCP goals, and a sense of uncertainty.
Today, we are a “Phoenix” club. With 26 members and 7 goals already achieved, we are charging toward Smedley Distinguished (10 goals) by June 30th. Here is how we moved from a spark to a flame.
Step 1: Accept the “Presence in the Room”
Recovery started when we stopped trying to fix it in isolation. We welcomed the support of our Area Director and the presence of experienced leaders like James Hurford. Sometimes, you need an outside perspective to remind you of your own potential.
Step 2: Honor the Rituals
We brought back the “theatre” of Toastmasters. By reinstating formal member and officer inductions, we moved away from “just another meeting” and back to a sense of belonging. Guests noticed the shift. The room felt professional, purposeful, and—most importantly—alive.
Step 3: Future Pacing
We used a “Future Pacing” exercise to visualize our club at 20+ members before the numbers ever arrived. We acted like a President’s Distinguished club when we only had 14 members. By creating a flexible agenda and a high-energy Speech-a-thon, we built a “product” that members were proud to invite their friends to.
Step 4: The Result
Our growth wasn’t a fluke; it was a formula.
- April 2025: 14 Members | 3 DCP Goals | “The Struggle”
- April 2026: 26 Members | 7 DCP Goals | The Success
A Message to D71
To the clubs currently under 20 members: Recovery is not just possible; it is inevitable if you focus on the quality of the experience. Don’t just aim to survive the year—aim to be extraordinary.
We are aiming for 10 goals. We are aiming for the top. We’ll see you at the finish line.
