David joined Toastmasters in November 2016 after watching and listening to a Toastmaster friend deliver a humorous speech at a club meeting. He was looking for a new interest in his local community relating to creative writing opportunities and saw that Toastmasters might be interesting. He works in a variety of capacities as a children’s entertainer, children’s events Manager, Manual Handling Trainer, and guest speaker.
He lives in Athgarvan in Newbridge Co Kildare, “a stone’s throw” as they say from The Curragh plains with his wife Mary and two sons Josh and Oliver.
How I have benefited from my Toastmasters experience
I have had a multitude of opportunities to use and improve my creative writing talents through storytelling while presenting speeches or providing training to fellow members. My greatest reward has been to make lifelong friends whom I value enormously. They often remind me that friendships are at their best in moments of failure or when we need help at unexpected intervals.
What most excites me about my District role
The realization that every day is a new day and a new learning experience opportunity. As one door or chapter closes another opens.
What I would say to someone considering a Toastmasters leadership position is....
Feel the fear but do it anyway to paraphrase an oft used quote. You are far more capable than you imagine. Discover untapped skills that may become your newfound strengths. The world has no limits except those in our minds.
